mid length
'Midlengths' cover a varied and exciting range of designs which between short and longboards.

While combining elements of both types, midlengths gain manoeuvrability from short boards and paddle power and glide from the longboard.  This gives midlengths versatility in a wide range of conditions with great appeal to a broad spectrum of surfers.

Midlengths are also very interesting subjects for research and development as changes in design can easily be passed both up to the longboard and down to the shortboard.  Often forming the centrepiece of an all-round surfers quiver.  Midlengths can serve to smooth the transition between short and long. They also make excellent travel boards due to their versatility as well as their relative ease of transportation.

Surfline Surfboards is widely recognised as introducing the modern longboard to New Zealand.  It is however also notable that prior to this we were building midlengths in the form of our 'Woodenships' branded 'Wavewalker' designs.

The longest blanks available 25 years ago in N.Z. were around 7'4" in length.  This meant our early longboard style designs were mainly around 7'0" in length.

his meant our early longboard style designs were mainly around 7'0" in length.  Many of these first midlengths featured twin keel shaped fins and were around 22" wide with area pin tails.  As other blanks became available lengths varied between 6'0" and 8'8".

The 'Wavewalker' evolved through all the changes from single fin through to quads.  Over time we also developed our well known 'Innovator' and 'Freestyle' series designs.  Our most recent midlength design excursions have produced the 'AP3' and 'Innovator Deluxe' models.

From a design/shape perspective, midlengths present pretty much a blank canvas and offer lots of scope for design exploration.

Surfline specialises in designing midlengths that incorporate generous and well placed volume for effective floatation, paddle power and glide.

We have designed an innovative deck contour and rail foil combined with high performance rocker and bottom contours.

These boards have all the ingredients to help get beginners started with tons of performance to grow into.  Experienced surfers benefit from this blend of performance and versatility.

Midlengths are a realistic and exciting shortboard alternative for longboard only surfers.  Our midlength models are surprisingly performance capable with generous paddle power.
